Abstract
The success of standard treatments (chemotherapy, radiotherapy, surgery, and hormone therapy) in preventing/curing serious diseases is at best modest; moreover these treatments often carry unavoidable and devastating side effects. Therefore the immune system, the discipline of a healthy lifestyle, and the early detection of disease (using biomarkers) are our three friends in disease prevention and cure. With its aim of maintaining an exquisitely precise response to a vast array of potential native and foreign antigens, the immune system is a complex and powerful but imperfect system that needs to be given priority in the field of disease research.
