Abstract
With the advent of new generation of core switches carrying ever increasing amount of traffic, it is paramount that they exhibit 5 nine availability. The availability definition must include software and hardware failures, upgrades and loss of performance. The paper details the requirements for these switches in terms of load sharing, redundancy, hot-swappability, hitless capacity expansion and upgrades and software reliability. High performance in the face of variety of traffic mix, flood of routing updates, and protection from incorrect configuration and provisioning must also be factored into the availability definition.
