Abstract
There is a diversity of opinions on the potential impact of Information Systems (IS) on individuals, organizations and society. The four companies are leaders within their industries and could service as standards for other organizations. This comparative study on the role of information management was based on printed data, interviews and questionnaires used within the companies and public domain information. Their management and IS structures and functionality is an excellent example of effective usage of information at the right time. The role of information systems (IS) has influenced management styles and has reduced uncertainty in the decision making process. A protocol to consider in developing an Information System is suggested: "IS works best when kept simple with an aim of achieving the business mission.".
