Abstract

This paper reports a 25-year follow-up study which assesses the efficacy of milieu therapy as an approach with which to treat confined juvenile delinquents diagnosed as antisocial personalities, neurotics and psychotics. As measured by the presence of a subsequent criminal history, it was found that the antisocials in the sample benefited most from milieu therapy regardless of treatment duration. With treatment of over four years, almost three-fourths of the antisocial youths showed enduring benefit. The findings of this study have implications for both adherents of correctional treatment methods and its critics. © Taylor & Francis Group, LLC.
