Description
Sarah Sabina Morris Kean and Julia Ursin Niemcewicz Kean wrote from Ursino, Elizabethtown, New Jersey to John Kean, unaddressed. Sarah was sorry to hear of her son’s disappointment, but he certainly judged very wisely by not coming out in the storm. Wrote to Dr. Stevens some time ago and told him that John would visit him. The next time he was able to go to New York, Sarah wished he would go. She entreated upon him to persevere in Latin; dry, hard, and difficult as it may be. John’s father, Peter Kean, tried to impress upon him the necessity of acquiring a knowledge of Latin. No one felt so strong an interest in John as his father did. It was the will of the Almighty that John was deprived of his father at the time in his life when he most required his advice and direction, but Sarah trusted that he would recollect and endeavor to fulfill every wish Peter Kean expressed for him. Mr. And Mrs. Lawrence were visiting the evening prior in a sleigh. John’s sister, Julia, added a few lines where she mentioned she was disappointed he had not visited the day before and hoped he would come soon. Thought that John would like Scott’s Poems; Rokeby, Lady of the Lake, and the Lord of the Isles better than the Iliad and the Odyssey, which Sarah and Julia sent him.
