Description
In recent years, Kean University has recruited faculty to implement OER content in their courses in order to create a university environment that fosters the open exchange of educational resources across the curriculum and improves the affordability of a university education for all students across the socioeconomic spectrum. The period of remote education prompted by the COVID-19 pandemic provided an unexpected opportunity by intensifying the need for students to access textbooks and other learning-support materials in digital format.
Extending from an initiative spearheaded by Kean University/Learning Commons administration, an OER Task Force including student interns was formed in Summer 2020 as a means of implementing open access outreach via multiple avenues. Since its formation, the OER Task force has developed a university repository that allows Kean faculty and other community members to upload their work to an online digital commons. In addition, the OER Task Force has increased outreach to Kean faculty in order to encourage them to replace much of their course content with OER materials.
The Learning Commons has also supported this initiative by making OER collections (including books and journals) available through its discovery service. In addition, the Learning Commons has built OER into strategies meant to support student development of information literacy skills.
